Born Meir Eshel, Absalon adopted his pseudonym when he began working as an artist in Paris in the late 1980s. He was best known for his ‘cells’, austere dwellings intended for solitary living, which were designed according to the artist’s own physical dimensions. Like his sculptures, Absalon’s videos are focused on his own body. In this work, the camera is fixed on the face of the artist shouting and screaming to the point of exhaustion. The performance can be seen as a cathartic exercise, a way of driving out inner demons.

Absalon was born in Israel in 1964 and spent most of his career in France. He died in 1993.
