Tate Liverpool Workshop

An Introduction to Watercolour Exploration of technique, experimentation and process

Joseph Mallord William Turner, Sunset through Dark Clouds ?over the Sea c.1823–6. Tate.

Join us for an introduction to watercolours at Tate Liverpool with Artist Educator and Art Therapist Alice Davies

This practical workshop invites you to explore traditional and experimental watercolour techniques. You'll look at a brief history of watercolour and how artists in the Tate Collection have used the medium. These workshops coincide with the current JMW Turner with Lamin Fofana: Dark Waters exhibition.

Techniques learnt will then be applied to your own larger scale artworks. Over the course of the workshop, you will build up the introductory skills and techniques needed to get you started making your own masterpieces.

Examples of techniques include wet in wet, wash/graded, wash/variegated, wash, bleeding, negative painting and salt and wax resistance.

The sketching session includes materials to take home with you, including a set of Winsor & Newton: John Singer Sargent Watercolours, produced in collaboration with Tate.

This session is for adults aged 16 and over.
