Join us for the opening weekend of Richard Bell’s Embassy

Housed in a tent surrounded by protest signs, Embassy is a space for activism and dialogue in support of Aboriginal land rights in Australia.

Embassy is activated through a series of public events with Richard Bell in conversation with guest speakers and audience participants. The second day of the Embassy programme focuses on collective action and invites contributions from Farrukh Dhondy, Leila Hassan Howe, Black Cultural Archives, Emory Douglas, Sofia Karim and Jacob V Joyce. Together they explore questions of racial and social injustice, political organising, and the role of art and activism. Visitors are encouraged to take part in these conversations, sharing their stories and experiences. All conversations are documented, forming part of an archive that transcends national boundaries.

12.00–13.30

Explore the history of the British Black Power movement in the 1960’s and 70’s. Hear from individuals active during that period with contributions from Farrukh Dhondy and Leila Hassan Howe, as well as from Hannah Ishmael (Black Cultural Archives).

13.30–14.30

Join us for a free community lunch provided by Papi’s Pickles which is a social enterprise led by South Asian and Sri Lankan women. Founded in 2015, the food is made by women from these communities who relocated to the UK due to the conflict in Sri Lanka.

14.30–16.00

This conversation discusses the role of visual activism in challenging and shaping new political landscapes. Hear from revolutionary artist Emory Douglas, as well as Sofia Karim and Jacob V Joyce who will discuss the role of art and activism in their work.

The event will be filmed and livestreamed.
