International

Globalisation has changed the ways in which art is produced, presented and collected, and the terms by which it is understood. New forms of cultural dialogue and international exchange are developing, involving artists, institutions and audiences, within and between cities, regions, and continents. Tate is developing collaborative programmes and initiatives with a range of partners, connecting our staff and collection to programmes, audiences, institutions and individuals in many different parts of the world.

Tate aims to:

  • Engage audiences in art and dialogue through partnerships and projects, and by exploiting the potential of online content and participation through social media
  • Reflect and contribute to new understandings of historic, modern and contemporary art – its contexts, trajectories and histories – through research, use of the collection, temporary exhibitions and public programmes
  • Develop strategic partnerships with museums, galleries and art institutions for mutual benefit and exchange

International Initiatives

UK

Tate collaborates with a wide range of galleries and museums to enable more people across the UK to enjoy the visual arts, to share the collection and to stimulate debate about art and ideas. This includes a number of strategic initiatives and collaborative projects, including touring exhibitions.

This series of essays, On Collaboration, documents and reflects upon Tate’s national partnership programmes over the last seven years.

UK Collaborations

Local

Participants can join in a collaborative programme of events, projects, talks and workshops led by contemporary artists, writers and performers.

Tate Modern has several ongoing projects created for and with the immediate local community. Residents of Southwark or Lambeth are free to participate in these projects, including a community film club, a community garden for Bankside residents who have little access to outdoor space, and regular special exhibition previews, where local residents have access to the gallery to see the current special exhibition for free.

Tate Modern & You is a newspaper created annually by an artist in partnership with a neighbourhood or community group in South London. For the 2017 edition of Tate Modern & You, photographer Romain Mader has explored the dreamlife of residents of Rotherhithe as well as stories of the neighbourhood working with community organisation Time & Talents. These narratives have inspired a specially created backdrop and props which have been created by the mens shed project and feature in a newspaper. Romain Mader is a Swiss photographer who explores themes of gender-representation, loneliness and romance by creating fictional narratives within his images. MERGE is the annual arts, music and performance festival celebrating the contemporary culture and rich heritage of Bankside. MERGE is created by Better Bankside with Regeneration & Community Partnerships at Tate, making Bankside a place to work, live, visit, and do business, and leading Bankside-based arts events company, Illuminate Productions.
