Display caption

This watercolour shows workers forging cannon in a foundry. As in the picture of anchors being forged, Turner depicts industry which helped support Britain’s role in the French Revolutionary Wars. The location of this foundry is not confirmed, but Turner visited sites in Wales, the Midlands and the north of England at this time.
